Goal: I need a virtual environment to experiment on whilst in the “shed”. I have a reasonably workstation sitting around gathering dust… Hyper-V 2012 is free and its new.
Getting it done!
I used several sources to accomplish this goal. I’ve added links where appropriate.
Does the workstation support visualization?
The CPU and the BIOS must support VT (visualization technology) and it must be turned on. I had to update the BIOS to get the ability to turn on VT. You can check if your Intel chipset supports VT here “http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-030729.htm#1”.
Installing and configuration.
- Download the Hyper-V ISO from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/hyper-v-server/default.aspx
- Create a bootable USB : http://pc-addicts.com/bootable-usb-drive-using-powershell/
#Mount the iso in Windows8
#Insert your USB
#Look for the description of you USB under "Friendly Name"
# note the associated "Number"
Clear-Disk –Number –RemoveData
New-Partition –DiskNumber –UseMaximumSize –IsActive:$true
#Note the disk letter
Format-Volume –FileSystem NTFS –DriveLetter
Copy-Item –Recurse :\* :\
- Install Hyper-V: http://pc-addicts.com/hyper-v-server-2012-core-installation/
- Configure Remote management in workgroup: http://pc-addicts.com/remotely-manage-hyper-v-server-2012-core/
Hyper-V Server 2012 and remote hyper-v management in a workgroup (on windows 8 client)For the Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 (=core)
Enable remote config (sconfig.cmd option 4)
Add a local administrator (sconfig.cmd option 3)
with same username and password as you are using on the Windows 8 Client
with other username and password (on client you need to use
cmdkey /add:<ServerName> /user:<UserName> /pass:<password>
For other remote admin like Event Viewer, Volume Management etc. some firewall rules need to be enabled:
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Administration" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="File and Printer Sharing" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Service Management" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Performance Logs and Alerts" new enable=yes
Netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Event Log Management" new enable=yes
Netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Scheduled Tasks Management" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Volume Management" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Desktop" new enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Firewall Remote Management" new enable =yes
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="windows management instrumentation (wmi)" new enable =yes
sc config vds start= auto
net start vds
(for readonly remote device manager I enabled GPO “Allow remote access to the Plug and Play interface”, but still got an error trying to open a remote device manager)
For the Windows 8 Client
Install Hyper-V Client Tools using “Turn Windows Feature on or off” (win-Q, search on “control panel”, etc.)
Start component services config (win-Q, search on “DCOMCNFG”, right click and select “Run as administrator”
Select “Console Root > Component Services > Computers > My Computer”
Right click and select properties
Select the tab “COM Security”
Click on “Edit Limits” for the Access Permissions
Allow remote access by setting the checkmark for the “ANONYMOUS LOGON”
